Few South African nature reserves can claim to be protectors of precious African land, authentically true to their roots, and feature a diverse collection of flora hardly seen anywhere else on the planet. Tillietudlem is proud to be one of these few, and we believe our little corner of Natal Midlands heaven is truly one of a kind! Here’s why…
The Midlands Mistbelt is a stretch of land in KwaZulu-Natal stretching from north of Nkandla in the upper quadrant of the province, to the southern border that neighbours the Eastern Cape.
The Mistbelt is critically endangered, with just a fifth of its original area still intact, much of it fragmented across the province.
Our Tillietudlem nature reserve and Midlands accommodation is situated within the belt, east of Impendle, and we’ve been bestowed the privilege of looking after this precious land.
Pretty cool, right?
Thanks to our ideal positioning along the Midlands Mistbelt, our sprawling reserve boasts an impressive collection of flora – hardly seen anywhere else in the world!
Our grasslands, river bands and wetlands are carpeted with a diverse spread of wild flowers, gorgeous to behold not only for botanical enthusiasts.
We love it when we see people admiring the unique fauna and flora, and we believe that the preservation of the land is our duty – other than looking after our guests!
In our crusade to preserve the precious land our nature reserve sits on, we have a heard of registered indigenous Nguni cattle. These are free-roaming bovines that are used to stimulate the migration of massive herds of game that migrated through the Mistbelt region.
In addition to this, our nature reserve features a stable – housing six horses – that we use to patrol the perimeter fences and warn off potential poachers.
Traditionally, before the invention of the combustion engine, farmers had to herd game on horseback – and we’re proud to do the same at Tillietudlem.
